Abstract

Abstract

The civil rights movement of the 1960s was the culmination of social unrest and the racial clash between an oppressive south and a growing faction of people calling for equality. The dominant leaders of the movement were  Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X whose methods and ideologies would continue after their assassinations. The civil rights movement of today, Black Lives Matter and others, demonstrates aspects of both leaders in their approaches. While the modern movement lacks central leadership with Twitter being its prominent organizer, it nevertheless continues MLK and Malcolm X’s legacies.

Biography

My name is James Harrison McElroy. I wrote my thesis about American civil rights because I have a great interest in politics and debate and I wished to study the controversial topic of the event of the summer of 2020 when the civil rights movement resurged.

I wanted to learn more about the history of protesting and how the nation has responded and changed. I also wanted to study something under politics or history because would not be studying this in college. In pursuing a career in STEM, I wished to put this topic to rest and give it the full attention it deserved.
